about

The View From Here was recorded in 2015 at the end of my stint in NYC and brings together some expat Aussies (Troy Roberts and Matt Clohesy) and American Musicians (Bennett Paster and Jordan Perlson). I have been living in Singapore since 2016 until moving back to Australia in December 2019. I'm now based in Melbourne.

Most of the tunes are reflections of growing up in semi-rural Australia.

Louch - An age old question... Is it a Lounge or a Couch?

Messages - This one features Troy Roberts on Tenor Sax. It's about the building of the overland telegraph line from Darwin to Port Augusta in South Australia that connected Australia to the rest of the World - Hence the cover image from the State Library of South Australia. I originally named this tune Terra Incognita from the first message sent along the telegraph line on August 22nd 1872.
"WE HAVE THIS DAY, WITHIN TWO YEARS, COMPLETED A LINE OF COMMUNICATIONS TWO THOUSAND MILES LONG THROUGH THE VERY CENTRE OF AUSTRALIA, UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO A TERRA INCOGNITA BELIEVED TO BE A DESERT".

The Bad - Is about all the dangerous Australian creatures that the rest of the World are terrified of.

161W56 (Trio) - is the stage door entrance to Carnegie Hall where I was fortunate to watch a rehearsal of the Orpheus Ensemble w/ the Wayne Shorter Quartet along with 2 other audience members... all because of a connection from the cafe where I worked making coffee!

The River - Is about a family 4WD trip where we intended to cross the Simpson Desert but couldn't because of flooding in Central Australia. All those dry river beds that overflowed from the downpour.

Old Times - Is a reminder that Australia is a lot older than a couple of hundred years and to respect where we live and the people who have cared for the land throughout its long history.

Oct 19 - was the date that I realised that I would soon be leaving NYC.

Enjoy the music!!
